Ok there was two purposes for the trip up to the farm. One was to work, but more importantly to go turkey hunting.
Left home around 3am Friday morning to make the drive so I could get into the woods by 6. I had decided to hunt Clark CA since we hadn't really herd or seen birds on our farm during youth season 3 weeks earlier. As soon as I got there it was pretty obivous that I should've slept in. The wind was blowing around 20 with a slight mist in the air. No gobbles at all this morning, not even a peep of anything. In fact the only thing I saw was a big fat oppussum. So around 9:30 I called it a day. Headed to the farm, had a quick breakfast and coffee with my Grandparents. Then it's off to work. Had a large willow to finish cutting up down by the pond that I started on during youth season. Plus numerous smalls trees.
Here's what is looked like at 1:30
The aftermath at 7 PM
Once I got everything put away for the night called my dad to give him a hard time about how bad hunting was. Especially since he informed me that the turkeys were talking real good earlier in the week, but ended up at his house since my phone doesn't work with a crap in the country. I met my little brother Jeremiah for the first time. It's a long story maybe I start writing about it someday.
Saturday morning I stayed and hunted at the farm and I thought I was in for a stellar day hunting. It was 35 degrees with a frost on the ground. A little cold, but manageable. Hunted until 11 and all I saw was a lone hen about 200 yards across the field feeding. No gobbles, nothing. So dinner time and get ready to plant a tree in memory of my Uncle Chris. Just waiting on Aunt Deb and Uncle John to arrive so we could start. While we were waiting, my dad calls around 1:30 to inform me there are 2 Jake's in the bean field across the road from the pond. It was tempting to go after them, but had more important things at hand.
They got there around 2 and planting we begin. This tree was by far a lot bigger than expected.
After we finished Grandma had fresh pies awaiting for us to indulge upon. Chocolate and Pecan. MMMM....GOOOD! Back to work as I needed to finish cleaning up from the day before. Aunt Deb came down, she started raking up the small stuff to burn later. Than Grandma showed up with two of the Amish boys, Aaron and Monroe. Aaron came down to the pond and helped me as Monroe assisted Grandma with odds and ends about the gardens. Monroe finally got to help us boys as you could tell he wanted to be with us. We ended up pulling about 10 Cedar trees out and hauled off four loads of brush in the short time they helped. It sure does make a difference when you got extra hands to pitch in.
The funniest moment of the whole weekend was after we got done hauling the brush. Grandma made a bunch of pizzas for supper. Debbie informed Grandma that the boys couldn't have any Chocolate pie. Well she told the boys that when Deb wasn't in the room. Shortly after that she walked back in and Aaron said. I sure would like a piece of that pie. The whole table erupted with laughter. Of course Debbie sliced a piece off and his face just lite up like it was Xmas.
5:30 am Sunday the alarm went off and turkey hunting we go. Got outside to put my boots on and what ya know it's raining. So away I go. It rained for 2 more hours. Nothing, until around 9 when I ran into that same old hen again. So after 5 Hrs I cried uncle, and gave up for the day.
To my surprise Mom and Jim stopped by for dinner as they were headed back to St. Louis. They had been in Grinnell, IA visiting friends. Plus Deb and John came down for the day as well.
Before I left there was one more chore that needed to be done, dump the trash barrels. So off I went with the first, and what happens. I got the tractor stuck. Went up to get the bigger tractor and the batteries were dead. So the last resort was call my Dad. Luckily he was home. So here he comes, as I just needed a little help. He hung around until I was done just in case. So as we departed I said Happy Birthday to him. That was the first time that ever happened. Oh and by the way he said it back to me, since our B-Day's are the same day. That was a first as well.
So back to city I go. No matter what happens at the farm it's always nice to be there. I miss it something terribly bad. Be back next week.
